They justified their opposition on plausible humanitarian grounds, arguing that more arms would only fuel the bloodshed, but privately, said the president, key allies objected that an independent Bosnia would be “unnatural” as the only Muslim nation in Europe. He said they favored the embargo precisely because it locked in Bosnia’s disadvantage.
“Filthy” was sarcasm if that wasn’t clear. What I wanted to say is: I’m surprised that they’re going to allow Albania, a country with a majority Muslim population, into the EU, because I would’ve thought their bigotry would get the better of them. Islamophobia has been a thing in Europe for a good while and never gotten better if recent election results are any indication. I also took the opportunity to throw shade at European conduct during the Bosnian War because that was fucked up.
