• Everyone should be aware that OP is clearly using AI to summarize the articles they’re posting, and the summaries are garbage. This is the second one I’m calling out. Here’s the first.

    First sentence of summary;

The EU suspended its planned tariffs on €20.9 billion in U.S. goods after Trump paused his new 10% tariff on all EU imports, opting for a 90-day truce.

    In the actual article.

Trump had hit the 27-nation bloc with a 20 percent duty on all goods. Under pressure as financial markets melted down, he halved the levy to 10 percent — the baseline he has set in his bid to bring investment and industrial jobs lost to globalization back home.

In short, summary says 10% tarrif was paused. This is completely wrong. The 20% tarrif was paused and reduced to the 10% baseline he set for everyone (which is still extremely high).

OP, if you’re not going to proofread AI generated summaries for accuracy, don’t use them.

Thank you so much. I down voted the post because of this. I rely on summaries a lot due to lack of time. Thank you for calling this out.

  • Honestly I really love that they’re taking the time to dial things in so that it disproportionately hits red states. As an engineer, it’s this sort of considered, thoughtful approach to engineering targeted solutions that I really appreciate <3

I read another comment suggesting their efforts would actually be better spent targeting purple or barely-red states, if the goal is to really hurt Trump’s support. You can only realistically change the minds of a small percentage of MAGAs, then it makes sense to target the regions where that small percent translates to a flip in votes.

I’m not sure I totally buy the analysis, since all this tariff bullshit is as much about messaging and dick-waving as anything else, but there’s probably a nugget of truth to it.

      • I think there’s merit in both targets.

        • staunch red states definitely need to Find Out; a targeted punitive policy is absolutely warranted
        • purple/swing states need to have the day they voted for

So maybe the hardest and broadest sanctions and tariffs are applied to deep red states, and purple states are hit with somewhat less systemically severe measures that are intended to cause the most consumer distress.

Or put another way: intentionally aim to undermine the economies of red states in a holistic sense, and simultaneously use trade policy to illustrate to purple states why it’s a very fucking bad idea to go more red by both prioritizing effects on voters and underlining the policies aimed at red states as a potential escalation.

I agree that makes a lot of sense–to your original point of targeting policies to achieve very specific goals.

      • Have you seen the protests (notably April 5th) in states like Utah, Idaho, Nebraska, and Texas? They don’t need to target purple states when the red states are already starting to flip publicly

        Well that comment is dumb.

Hurting the blue portion of purple/barely red isn’t going to do jack shit. They’re majority already staunchly against drumpf and everything he stands for. They didn’t vote for this.

If diehard red states love him so much, by all means help them live in his world. If they won’t change their mind, oh well. Doesn’t mean they don’t need to be inconvenienced for it.

Nah, he’s onto something. Say you can only change 5% of MAGA minds. Firm red state won’t change. But a purple state? Now it’s blue enough to change races.

          • But what makes you think the purple states won’t see what is happening to the red states? Not to mention that it will be much harder to just target the red parts of purple states.

  • At least sane heads prevail somewhere.

And that’s really the right answer. Let the US randomly punish its citizens and keep the EU as a stable place to invest that follows the predictable rules.

  • With only Hungary dissenting

It was a day ending in Y, after all…

  • Its amazing to see well functioning government that runs based on well known principals. Game theory showed what works best and they are following it. Bravo.

  • He wants hair trigger retaliation. His strategy consists of sucker punches, which is why he has to obfuscate his plans. When we deliberate, he loses ground.
