  • Ah yes, yet another way to control and hurt women. The whole idea of medical care during birth is based on situations where you happen to need it. If things go well, they go well. Being at the hospital or having a midwife is about when things go off the rails. The vast majority of people want you and your child to survive childbirth, which is a dangerous and difficult process for many out there. Anyone who says “just don’t have help you might need, it’ll be fine” is either a liar or actively trying to harm you.

This is just another branch of “under the hood” religious nutjobiness like Tradwives which all boils down to active alt-right control over women.

  • Both very good points and grounded in reality, though my attitude is more about the general public being stupid more than the general public recognizing the limits of the roads or even the law.

    https://etsc.eu/sales-of-dangerous-us-pickup-trucks-up-20-in-europe/

The uptick in people leveraging the individual registrations is a canary in the coal mine. People want to have giant wasteful crap. At least some people do. If enough people start having big trucks and SUVs on the road, the demand to make allowances for them grows. Can you knock down the old Regensburg medieval city for SUVs? Unlikely. Can you start making more suburban style roads and land wasteful areas outside of the downtown? Most assuredly.

I’m hoping smarter and more reasonable heads prevail in the EU. I don’t care what people want on this front. The car makers want to sell huge killing machines since they’re higher profit per unit. There’s at least some people wanting to buy them. The protection of pedestrians, the environment, and the city itself from terrible infrastructure designed to accommodate these trash machines should win out if at all possible.

  • This is the THIRD time the Republicans have cancelled funding to my research projects over the course of 15 years. This country isn’t conducive to stable research work.

The projects cancelled were on senior care tech with smart homes, augmented reality to help prevent falls, and air quality feedback to help people during wildfire seasons. No exactly hotbeds of controversial topics, but having my career and livelihood jerked around against and again by these assholes is enough for me to go. The lastest bend to fascism was just the nail in the coffin.

  • It is, and I’m well aware of just how hard it is to be in my kind of position. I’m leaving very soon for a job overseas.

It took 12 years of college. It took massive debts that I spent a decade earning to pay off. It took a further 15 years of competing in academia to become a desirable candidate for the job. I’m taking a serious pay cut and spending the saving from a decade of work to make the move.

Its a privilege, but having come from a family that valued education, but had little money to help me, I kinda feel like I’ve earned it. Decades of effort on my part went into this.

You can be pissed all you want, but I’ve paid my dues and I’m spending them on a better and safer future for my children away from the US Banana Republic of Dumbfuckistan.

  • Our crew is currently heading to a consulate for more German Visa steps. In just our family, two STEM phds, multiple kids going into engineering, and other college grads are moving out of the US.

I’ve lost funding for my research here. Yet again due to Republican anger at education. Every time they take control of power they fuck over my career. So, I’m done. I’ll go do software engineering research in a country that wants me.

When you look at the list of groups attacked and burned by the Nazis in the past, we check multiple boxes. I’m not subjecting my children to that.

We’re insanely privileged to be able to make this move and I know most others left behind don’t have this luxury.
