Thank God he’s not a fascist.
That’s right. I’m relieved the leader of the largest Jesus Christ following religion isn’t a fascist. Because sometimes they are.

1 yearHow do we know that he isn’t? Musk proclaims a love of free speech and is a fascist. Trump has repeatedly spoken out against wars, but his wars are OK in his book.

Judging by his track record I think he will largely continue Francis’ legacy. Perhaps a bit more conservative than Francis, but I’ve found his statements encouraging for the most part. He’s criticized both JD and Trump in the past, and he seems to be focusing on the more positive Christian teachings like caring for the poor rather than the fire and brimstone wing

Talk is cheap. It’s very easy for him to say these thing. It’s much harder for him to do anything about it.
On the other hand, he could do something about the child exploitation that’s going on in his church.

“The Catholic Church has always loved free speech” is not an extremist position, it’s just factually false. Even people who love the Church acknowledge that the Reformation and Inquisition happened and heretics were burned for expressing “bad” ideas. That people shouldn’t be burned to death for heresy was even one of the statements that got Martin Luther excommunicated.

I know he’s the pope and has to talk like that, but free speech is not a “precious gift”. It’s a hard-won right and “calling for it” is not gonna protect it. I swear to Nonexisto, if this clown gets the credit after the people win the fight, I’m gonna get an aneurism.

Well, i suppose if the free speech in a region has been there for a while, it’s a gift from the people who fought hard for it.
Fair enough. But I’d rather think of it as a torch that has been passed on and has to be guarded and kept ablaze. Lighting it was the hardest part, but the job’s not done.

The International Federation of Journalists records that 94 journalists and media workers, including 9 women, have been killed in 2023. Since 7 October, more than one journalist a day has lost their lives during the war in Gaza, a scale and pace of loss of media professionals’ lives without precedent. Publishing ahead of International Human Rights Day, on the 10th December, the IFJ insists that far greater action is required from the international community to safeguard journalists’ lives and hold to account their attackers.

That is why Pope Leo XIV would speak directly speak about the Palestinian Genocide if he truly cared about journalism and the protection of it and the people who practice it.

So, blatant inaccuracies aside, this doesn’t change the fact that he quite literally did speak up about it, well before your toddler-esque “if he doesn’t say exactly this then he’s against us” rant.
The fact that he said something to begin with is already a step in the right direction. What you’re asking is unrealistic.

I never said this was a binary choice, or that he was against Palestinians, just that this it is cowardly to not mention the genocide where a historic amount of journalists are being killed.

Well he found the time to make prouncements about the importance of journalism and protecting journalism, so why not speaking directly to the genocide where the shocking majority of journalists have been killed for the last 3 years at an unprecedented rate and with incredible, naked murderous aims to specifically assassinate journalists?
Your argument is about priorities and amount of time to devote to them, but it doesn’t even make sense as an argument since the pope ALREADY decided to devote time towards emphasizing how important protecting journalism and a free press is, so fundamentally my argument is one of the way he chose to do the thing, not that he should have done one thing before doing another thing.
